What’s the origin story of your business?
Hello, my name is Jamie Taylor and I am the owner of J Taylor Designs. I am a designer. I like rearranging spaces to see not only how a layout looks but how it feels. Designing a home is a personal experience for me; I want to make sure the homeowners’ wants and wishes are satisfied, their budget is respected, and the building process is smooth, accurate, and up to code. I never really thought that I would be a business owner. However, from 2008 after the recession, I went from working at a company to owning my own business. I wanted to create my own brand and image and it felt like this all happened organically.
What’s an obstacle that you’ve had to overcome to build your business?
An obstacle that I had to overcome in my business is being a woman in a man’s world. I had to prove that I’m good at what I do and can do whatever a man can do. A tip that I would give a woman starting a business would be to take out emotions and think from a man’s perspective. Ask questions like what would they do and be confident.
What is unique about owning and running a business in Murfreesboro?
I have lived here for about 20 plus years and this town’s heart is so sweet and has a small town feel! I love how loving the community is and it makes running a business easier. I also consider Murfreesboro being a friendly town!
As a business owner, what keeps you up at night?
I would have to say time management. Time management can be difficult on our end and for clients. For example, Hairstylists know exactly when and where they’re doing hair but for us we have a lot of clients who aren’t particularly on a schedule so being able to manage time better where we don’t get overwhelmed would be great.
If you could wave a magic wand and make one problem go away in your business what would it be?
I would have to say the organization of the clients. What I mean by this is it can be hard to manage the capacity of clients so to be able to be more organized and still give excellent service would be something I would like to do. Changing that issue or finding a better way to approach it would be great for business.
If you could travel back in time to the day you started your business, what advice would you give yourself?
If I could travel back in time to the day I started my business, the advice that I would give myself is that I got it and be confident in myself for the journey ahead!
What time of the day are you most productive?
Great question! The time I am most productive is between 7 to 12 and I usually go to sleep around 9.
What’s one thing you’d say to a person starting a new business?
Some advice I would give a person starting a new business is that you’ll never know it all but will know people who do. My husband has told me that for many years and I definitely see why that is important.
What’s one thing you’d say to a person who’d owned a business for a long time?
I would congratulate them on their business journey and ask them questions on what got them there in the first place.
