How did you get the idea for your business?
I would go on walks in Puckett Station which is one of the top neighborhoods in Murfreesboro. I would see these houses being built and thought they were so nice. I ended up getting an idea to go into real estate.
I learned what I needed to know and kept it to myself and did not tell anyone for a while. One day a close friend asked me if I had ever considered going into real estate. I was in shock because it was so random but it seemed like a sign.
How did you make your first sale?
I had friends who wanted to sell in Smyrna. It was my very first listing. I helped them prepare to sell and was able to sell their house for the price they desired.
What is unique about owning and running a business in Murfreesboro?
Murfreesboro has the best of everything. There is a lot to offer and we have every socioeconomic person here which is different from Marshall and Williamson County. There is a variety here that sets us apart.
How do you advertise your business?
We market with ads in the New York Times and LA papers. Including the sites Zillow and Trulia are costly, but because George Weeks emphasizes marketing it pays off.
As a business owner, what keeps you up at night?
Lack of inventory for sure. Lately, it is like Games of Thrones because there are buyers with healthy budgets but houses are being bought with cash and are whipping contingencies. Every house is fought for.
What is one way you’ve had to pivot or change course to grow your business? What led to you making that decision?
Social Media because by creating a social media presence that is more about relatability and authenticity and not data-driven it invites the customers. It has helped me when it comes to others reaching out with questions. I am not going to put pressure on anyone. I will help most honestly and clearly.
If you could time travel back to the day you started your business, what advice would you give yourself?
I would tell myself to just jump in and be more aggressive in the beginning. Before my husband passed he was the main breadwinner. So I just saw real estate as a hobby, but I have hustled to get where I am today since then.
Where do you want to go with your business?
I would like to have multiple streams of income coming in from my investments and have my properties pay for themselves.
What’s the one thing you’re doing right now from a marketing perspective that’s getting you more customers?
I am getting more into social media and getting used to everything on all platforms. I am expanding to TikTok, videos, stories, and live streams.
What’s one business lesson you’ve learned that you’d be willing to share?
Be teachable because this business is ever-changing. You can learn something new from each deal. Also, expect a challenge because you have to be able to regroup and bounce back.
What’s a podcast, book, or website you’d recommend that has inspired you to grow your business?
Psycho-Cybernetics was written by a plastic surgeon. It’s really about how you see yourself internally. Like if you see yourself as a failure it will reflect the energy you project and how you see yourself. Basically before fixing the outside, fix the inside first and see what happens.
What do you use for your daily to-do list?
I use my “Plan of Action” notebook and google calendar. My notebook is what helps me stay on task and remember important events.
What social media tools do you use that other business owner could use?
I am starting TikTok but others that are great are Youtube, iMovie, Canva, etc. Any video content that is over a minute will lose the customer’s attention.
