Alex Mitchell – Alex’s Extreme Clean

What’s the origin story of your business?

It all started three years ago when I was just 19 and in my first semester of college. I had just left my job at a distribution center and landed a gig with a local carpet cleaner who was transitioning into a new business installing floors. After working with him for about six months, he surprisingly offered to sell the business to me! I took the leap and became a business owner at 19.

What’s an obstacle that you’ve had to overcome to build your business?

Being young in this industry. People often doubt my abilities because of my age. They might not trust someone so young to do a good job. It’s been tough overcoming that initial hurdle and proving that I can deliver excellent service despite my age.

What is unique about owning and running a business in Murfreesboro?

The best part about running a business here is the incredible sense of community. Everyone knows everyone, or at least knows someone who knows you! It’s like having a built-in network. People here take pride in supporting local businesses, and because you know so many folks, word-of-mouth recommendations travel fast. It’s like having a giant family cheering you on!

As a business owner,  what keeps you up at night?

As a business owner, the weight of responsibility can be heavy at times. Financial worries are a big one – can I meet payroll and keep the lights on? But it’s not just the bottom line. I constantly question my decisions – am I on the right track? Am I providing the best possible service? Ultimately, that’s what matters most. We focus on quality over quantity, making sure our customers are truly satisfied. That’s the message I convey to my team as well.

What’s one thing you’d say to a person starting a new business?

The best advice I can give to new business owners is to avoid debt whenever possible. Being debt-free in my business has been a huge weight off my shoulders, and it’s allowed me to focus on what truly matters.

Of course, passion is critical too. If you’re not passionate about your product or service, it’ll be tough to find the drive to succeed. But combine that passion with smart saving, so you can invest in your business and take calculated risks. Remember, success won’t come without hard work, but if you have the passion and work ethic, you’ll be well on your way.
